How do I Send Push and Pull Messages to the Branded App?

This article outlines how to setup a Push and/or Pull message to send to mobile app users.

Before You Start

Before anything else, everyone should understand the detailed differences between a Push and Pull message:

  • Push Message - messages which can be sent directly to a user's mobile device, and appear on the lock screen, or as a banner message in the top section of a mobile device. Push messages require end user opt-in at the device level in order for these to appear on their device. These message types do not support image attachments.

  • Pull Message - messages which can be sent directly to the mobile app and appears in the app’s notification center. Pull messages can appear to your end user’s regardless of push settings. These message types support image attachments.

Create a Push and Pull Campaign Message Template

These instructions will walk you through how to create a template for your Push or Pull messages:

  1. Log into pxsweb.com

  2. On the left navigation, click Marketing Tools

  3. In the expanded list, click Campaign Message Templates

  4. At the top of the table, click New Campaign Message Template

    On the New Campaign Message Template screen:

  • In the Label field, include relevant information here like date/reason for the message

  • In the Event Type dropdown, select Campaign

Navigate to Mobile App Messages and open to view the Push and Pull settings.

  • In the Push Body field, add the content in which you would like to appear on the locked screen/as a banner message on the device. NOTE: There is a character limit of 500 characters.

  • In the Pull Body field, add the content in which you would like to appear in the notification center. NOTE: There is a character limit of 1000 characters.

  • In the Pull Message Image field, if desired, attach an image that will be accompanied by the Pull Body. NOTE: For perfectly fit images, we recommend keeping equal dimensions of 500x500 px; however, rectangular dimensions are supported.

  • Press Submit.

NOTE: If you only want to send a Push message, leave the Pull body section blank. If you only want to send a Pull message, leave the Push body blank.

Send Message Via Campaign Builder

Sending the push or pull message is similar to sending out any other campaign. Read Campaign Builder Guide to see how to send out a campaign.

NOTE: You can see the effectiveness of your push or pull campaign(s) by visiting Marketing Tools>Campaign Center. You'll be able to see general, but not guest specific, visit and spend information that ties back to your campaign(s).

Add Emoji to Push Notifications

In the Push body you can either use the decimal or hexadecimal code version of the emoji in the campaign message template.

The emoji will render in the campaign center preview for selecting mobile messages.

Add Parameters to Push/Pull Messages


You can add campaign and loyalty parameters like first name (<template:insert field="first_name">Guest</template:insert>) in Push/Pull messages. The character count only includes the final output of the parameter.

Testing

When testing receipt of push and pull messages, you will want to ensure you have opted into push notifications for the app on you device.

iOS Testing

  1. From the home screen of your device, open the Settings app

  2. In the Settings navigation search bar, type the name of you app. In the search results, press the app. Alternatively, you can scroll on the initial screen and find the app

  3. Press Notifications and ensure the Allow Notifications toggle is turned on

Android Testing

  1. From the home screen of your device, open the Settings app on your device

  2. In the Settings navigation search bar, type the name of you app. In the search results, press the app. Alternatively, you can press Apps, press All Apps, and scroll through the list of apps until you find your app.

  3. Press Notifications and ensure the All [App Name] notifications toggle is turned on
